Fiori is a continuous, highly detailed scrolling pattern of stylised leaves and flowers running throughout the border, giving it an ornamental, classical look reminiscent of Roman or Renaissance design elements. The design, like much of Mongiardino's boiserie work, employs visual illusion (trompe-l'œil) to mimic the effect of carved wood panelling or an ornate bas-relief, a signature technique of the "Architect of Illusion".
