Poke Powder: Overview
Poke Powder is derived from the Pokeweed plant (Phytolacca americana), a native North American herb traditionally used in folk medicine. Pokeweed has been historically used for its anti-inflammatory, immune-boosting, and purgative properties, but it is highly toxic if not properly prepared. The plant contains phytolaccatoxin and phytolaccigenin, which can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, nausea, vomiting, and even poisoning in large doses. In the Europe, it may also be called Poke Root Powder, Pokeweed Powder, or American Nightshade Powder. Some herbalists use it in small, carefully controlled amounts for lymphatic health and immune support, but extreme caution is advised.
