Unlike traditional wind chimes that follow strict musical scales, this chime creates a flowing blend of tones that naturally complement each other, no matter how you play.

The Foundation (4th Octave)

Starting with our longest 29.5" bar tuned to C4, you'll hear the deepest voice anchoring the instrument. But unlike other chimes in the collection, the Sunrise Flow gives you four additional notes in this lower register—D4 (28"), E4 (26.4"), G4 (24.2"), and A4 (22.8")—creating a rich, full-bodied foundation that feels melodically complete rather than sparse.

The Bridge (5th Octave)

The middle register mirrors the lower octave: C5 (20.9"), D5 (19.7"), E5 (18.5"), G5 (16.9"). This creates a climbing effect, a natural upward flow from root to root. The 5th octave acts as an echo of the 4th, doubling the melodic content and allowing the chime to sing with itself.

Why This Isn't an "Exact" Scale

This instrument follows a pentatonic structure, it intentionally omits the F and B notes found in a traditional major scale. These are the "tension" notes, the ones that create dissonance and demand resolution.

By leaving them out, the Sunrise Flow guarantees consonance. Every combination of bars you strike will sound harmonious. There are no wrong notes, no clashing intervals. This is the sonic logic behind pentatonic scales used in music traditions from Chinese guqin to African balafon—it's impossible to make it sound "bad."

When you strike multiple bars in succession or let them ring together, you don't hear a "melody" in the conventional sense. You experience layered resonance—a complex cloud of overtones and undertones that build on each other. The absence of F and B means the ear never feels the need to "resolve" to a predictable musical phrase. Instead, you float in a state of perpetual harmony.

The gaps in the scale create space for the harmonics themselves to become the music. Each bar's overtones interact with neighboring fundamentals, producing difference tones and sum tones that weren't struck directly.

The Sonic Output: Melodic Without Being a Melody

Because the bars are aluminum and the suspension is designed for maximum swing, each note sustains and decays relatively slowly.

Strike one bar and three seconds later you can strike another—the two tones will overlap, creating a chord that exists only in that moment. Strike all nine bars in a sweeping motion and you generate a cascading wash that takes 8-10 seconds to fully fade, each frequency revealing itself at a different rate.

The Sunrise Flow has a distinctly ascending, optimistic character. The doubled octave structure (4th and 5th mirroring each other) means you're always hearing the same melodic shape at two different heights. This creates a natural call-and-response between low and high, a conversation between earth and sky.
