A very nice Walt Carpenter Browntone bamboo fly rod, 9', 3-piece, 2-tip, and built for a #9.  Denoted "SDF" which I presume to mean "Salmon Dry Fly". Mint original condition with paper and gum strips on both the grip and fighting butt with Walt's initials on both. The rod was made in Chester, N.Y. and is serialized with “No 1, 1998”. It weighs 7.3 ounces on my scale. Flamed cane in three up node pattern. Superb varnish. The wraps are dark brown with black edges with yellow and red edges at the keeper and male ferrules. The Payne style step ferrules are oxidized jet black. The stripper is carbide and the snake guides are high arch HSS perfection. The grip is 7 1/2" long and turned to a “Western” style with a hidden pocket cap. As stated, the grip is covered with paper and gum strips with the customer’s name, as well as "9', S.D.F., #7, and W.E.C." all written on it. The reel seat insert is smoky walnut. The aluminum up-locking screw lock is reminiscent of the late model Payne style and is stamped “W.E. Carpenter, Maker”. The bottom of the seat is ferruled and has nickel silver pull out plug. The fighting butt is 4 1/2" long, and also has the original paper on it and a large red rubber button. The rod packs into an aluminum tube with brass fittings and Walt's data sticker. Larger Carpenters are few and far between and you won't find a finer example than this.
