Matisse created his Blue Nude cut-outs in the early 1950s when illness had confined him to bed and he could no longer paint standing up. Working with scissors and pre-painted paper, he invented a new medium. The Blue Cut Out 1952 is one of his most iconic late works: the figure reduced to pure form, the blue so saturated it becomes a colour experience rather than a description. One of the defining images of his final decade.
