The surface stays dry and stone-like, and warms to the hand rather than turning slick. The body is dense, which gives the mug real weight, walls of even thickness, and a rim fired to resist chipping. Leaving its edges unglazed is a finishing choice most makers skip — proof the piece is fired, not coated.
