Pseudobombax ellipticum, commonly known as the Shaving Brush Tree, is a fascinating caudiciform species prized for its swollen trunk and spectacular flowers. Native to Central America and Mexico, this unique plant develops a thick water-storing base and eventually produces eye-catching pink or white blooms that resemble a shaving brush or fireworks.
Light: Bright light to full sun. More light encourages stronger growth and flowering.
Water: Allow the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy or when leafless.
Humidity: Average household humidity is sufficient.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures and should be protected from frost.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or caudex mix with excellent drainage.
Dormancy: May lose some or all of its leaves during cooler months or periods of stress. This is a normal part of its growth cycle.
Pet safe: Not considered pet safe. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
Fun fact: The spectacular flowers can reach several inches across and are made up almost entirely of long stamens, creating the appearance of a colorful shaving brush and attracting nighttime pollinators in their native habitat.
