Kurzfassung: Despite the currently applied technologies within the forging industry and the efforts made to promote the process reliability and production quality, forging lines are still suffering from deficiency in online capable techniques for monitoring both workpiece and tooling condition. Acoustic Emission (AE) technique offers a reliable, non-destructive and online-capable testing method which can be applied to monitor critical forgings defects and die failure events. However, many aspects should be examined to enable the integration of the AE technique into the production lines. These aspects include hardware selection, noise handling, selection of acquisition parameters, signal processing as well as the choice of analysis, correlation and classification methods. Based upon a combination of AE signal parameters as well as the investigation of the AE waveforms and spectra, the encountered damage und defects could be detected and analysed. For detailed analysis purposes, Gaussian Correlation and Gabor Wavelet Transformation methods have been applied. Furthermore, the recorded AE signals have been classified using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique. Finally, an indicator for simple classification of patterns based on a combination of both temporal and spectral derived parameters has been developed. The newly proposed indicator “AE Pattern Indicator for Forging” (PIFFAE) allows the online classification of the AE patterns acquired emitted due to encountered events like cracking or friction.
