Chloramphenicol is a bacteriostatic antibiotic agent against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. The antibiotic enters into sensitive cells by active transport. Within the cell, chloramphenicol binds to the 50S Subunit of bacterial ribosomes and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. The attachment of amino-acyl transfer RNA to its acceptor site on the ribosome is inhibited, preventing peptide bond formation by peptidyl transferase.
