This striking Greek semi-postal stamp began life as part of the 1906 engraved issue depicting the iconic Corinth Canal. In 1914, during the Balkan Wars period, Greece applied a dark-green cross and the overprint ΠΡΟΝΟΙΑ (“Welfare/Relief”) to raise funds for Red Cross and war-relief activities. The deep violet engraving of a ship traversing the narrow canal contrasts beautifully with the bold green emergency overprint. Collectors prize this issue both for its historical wartime context and for the dramatic visual combination of classic line-engraving with charity markings. Genuine, well-struck overprints are especially sought after.
