Quite a nice volume to add to one's art library if not there already, "Americans 1963" is the catalogue for the MoMA exhibition of the same title, curated by Dorothy Miller. Something of a time capsule, it features the work of 15 painters and sculptors "selected simply as individuals...of such consequence that they should," writes Miller in the introduction, "be more fully known to the museum's public." In addition to many artists who went on to become leading figures, it also includes some surprises. Represented through photographic portraits, black and white reproduction of art works, biographies, and artist statements, artists include Richard Anuszkiewicz, Lee Bontecou, Chryssa, Sall Hazelet Drum, Edward Higgins, Robert Indiana, Gabriel Kohn, Michael Lekakis, Richard Lindner, Marisol, Claes Oldenburg, Ad Reinhardt, James Rosenquist, Jason Seley, and David Simpson.
