BUTTONS UP introduces a novel approach to modular rug design, where pieces connect seamlessly using a button-like system, reminiscent of fastening a shirt. This innovative feature allows for the assembly of larger, unified carpet designs from individual segments, crafted using the traditional Klim technique enhanced with tufted details to highlight the visible knots and add texture.

This collection, distinguished by its significant social impact, is hand-woven by Afghani women supported by the Fatima Bint Mohamed Bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI), which provides these artisans with employment, healthcare, and education. Each rug serves as a canvas, blending KHALID SHAFAR’s contemporary aesthetic with Afghani cultural heritage. Incorporating KHALID SHAFAR’s signature patterns and the silhouette of Burj Khalifa, the designs use seven colours representing the '7 sands of the UAE', created from natural dyes. The collaboration highlights the brand’s commitment to social enterprise, supporting initiatives that nurture the wider design community and enhance cultural craftsmanship globally.
