Dorstenia foetida is a fascinating caudiciform succulent native to East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Valued for its thick, sculptural trunk and unusual flat, disc-shaped flowers, this species is a favorite among collectors of rare and unusual plants. Over time, it develops a distinctive bonsai-like appearance that makes each specimen unique.
Light: Bright indirect light to several hours of direct sun. More light encourages compact growth.
Water: Allow the soil to dry between waterings. Water more frequently during active growth and reduce watering during cooler periods.
Humidity: Average household humidity is suitable.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures and should be protected from frost.
Soil: Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice, perlite, or grit.
Dormancy: Growth may slow during cooler months. Reduce watering when the plant is not actively growing.
Pet safe: Toxicity information is limited. As with many succulents, it is best kept away from pets and children.
Fun fact: Despite its name, “foetida” refers to the odor produced when the plant is damaged, not its flowers. The unusual flower structures are actually specialized floral discs called cyathia, giving Dorstenia a look unlike almost any other succulent.
