In the summer of 2021 I worked at the Microsoft campus in Seattle for close to two months. During this time, I found Nirvana when I went to the Blick art supply store. On one of these trips, I purchased a set of warm red half stick Rembrandt soft pastels. When I got back to my downtown hotel room, I didn't have any real paper to draw on so I cut up the shopping bag that my purchases had been in. After making random marks for a few minutes, I saw that a drawing w starting to emerge. The indigenous art that I had absorbed the first couple of weeks I was there was a big influence on this drawing.
The drawing can be hung on two different axes. The horizontal Axis, Birth, you have a midwife type of entity at the head of a birthing table. This perspective is full of forward motion and feminine energy. When hung on the Death axis, you see an old man with white hair, baggy eyes, and uneven teeth. This old man is at the end of life, and his journey is quickly reaching its end.
