What a pair, happy together for a long time already, and I do hope forever! Obviously they were carved by the same person but it appears of two different woods, and decorated with what seems to have been a water based paint, a fair bit of it lost or faded but lots of good color remaining,  Great faces, great attituses, and I how the area underneath her chair was outlined but never carved out. Total charmers.

Both measure about 4 1/4" t x 7/8" w x 2 1/4" d. Aged but very good condition. Early 20th c. I would guess. Sold as a pair.
