Tastes like: Crème de Cassis. Wild Blackberry. Violet. Red Cherry. Earthy Spice. Fresh Herbs. Soft Oak. Silky Yet Structured Tannins.
Le Piou is a small-production Cabernet Franc from Château Daugay, situated at the foot of the Saint-Émilion slopes and owned by the de Boüard family — the same family behind Château Angélus. The cuvée forms part of Daugay’s newer low-intervention range, focusing on freshness, purity and site expression rather than extraction and power.
The 2023 vintage was hand harvested from a single vineyard with low yields before whole-berry fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged for six months in older 400L barrels, helping soften the texture whilst allowing the fruit to stay front and centre.
Cabernet Franc can sometimes get a bit stern and leafy, but Le Piou leans into the grape’s more vibrant and juicy side whilst still keeping that lovely savoury Bordeaux edge. Think silky texture, ripe tannins and loads of crunchy dark fruit.
The whole thing feels wonderfully modern for Saint-Émilion — lighter on its feet, packed with energy and built much more around drinkability than sheer weight.
