USS Gray, a Knox-class destroyer escort (later reclassified as a frigate in 1975), was commissioned on 4 April 1970, serving primarily in the Pacific Fleet . She completed multiple WESTPAC deployments, including combat support and search-and-rescue duties in the Sea of Japan and the Gulf of Tonkin . The ship notably earned the Battle Efficiency “E” and became the first Pacific Fleet vessel to qualify for Unrestricted Steaming on her propulsion . After humanitarian and Cold War operations, she was decommissioned on 29 June 1991, struck in 1995, and scrapped in 2001 .
