I haven't been able to find out much of anything about this wonderful little baby bluebird, which I found at the estate sale of an actress and philanthropist in Brookline, MA, whose many fine and interesting things reinforce my believe that this is something pretty special! It bears some resemblance to the birds produced by Stangl Pottery in the mid-20th century, but I think is much better--far looser (it looks positively abstract from certain angles), more individualistic, and far more charming! I believe it was sculpted by hand and is signed on the bottom with what appears to read "THacaring" or similar. I just love the open beak with pale pink inside (can't you just hear it chirping?); the tiny little side wing near its foot; the pale, inky glazing, which gives it almost the feel of watercolor; and how differently it reads from different points of view. It feels rather like a pure embodiment of spring!
