Collectable and rarely available vintage gold thread embroidered reversible silk kimono gown, with reversible belt.

The outside features dragons, clouds and lightening. In Japan, dragons signify strength and courage, and have magical powers. They are thought to control the elements, including water and rain, hence the weather-related imagery on this kimono. The fact they can influence harvests makes them also a symbol of wealth. The dragon is seen as having male energy and is a counterpart to the phoenix, a symbol of femininity. The silk lining of the kimono features a selection of traditionally auspicious Japanese flowers and plants - including Chrysanthemums, Peonies, Camellias and Maple leaves.

This gown is likely to have been made for export to the European market, and probably dates from the 1920s, following on from the huge upsurge in demand for Japanese inspired clothing and Japonisme in design that took hold in the late 19^th century.

One size 8-14. 52 inches/132 cm long. A small hanging loop has been added to the collar. One or two slight pulls to the embroidery and stitching at the neckline, but otherwise in very good vintage condition.
