UPDATE: Greater Good Charities' Disaster Team is in Jamaica now, working with local partners to assess needs and deliver aid where it is needed most.
The powerful sustained winds of 185 mph tore off roofs, leveled homes, uprooted trees and left most of Jamaica without power, while the western side of the island is underwater.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has declared the island a "disaster area" and said there is "significant damage".
With communication down, the true extent of the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa is still unknown. The loss of life and livelihood is also unknown, but Jamaica’s Energy and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz said damage is "catastrophic".
Hundreds of shelters have opened to help families and pets. An estimated 1.5 million people in Jamaica are expected to be directly impacted and left in unprecedented need.
Our partner Greater Good Charities has been busy preparing for impact with staged pet food and additional aid to deploy as needed while assessing the situation with local partners. But they can’t do it without you.
Greater Good Charities is dedicated to being there when it matters. With the help of an amazing community of donors, they've provided truckloads of supplies, food for both people and animals, medicine, emergency transport for pets and much-needed funding in the wake of extreme weather events like dangerous flooding, devastating tornadoes, wildfires, and deadly hurricanes.
We need YOUR help now! Donate now to rush this vital aid to the people and pets of Jamaica.
