Dzi beads are ancient beads from Tibet. Similar to etched carnelian, these beads feature designs created by baking natural dyes onto agate. They are believed to date back to approximately the 1st to 6th century AD. However, much about the dyes used remains a mystery, making these beads an enigmatic antique. While primarily found in Tibet, they have also been discovered in Bhutan and the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. Different baked patterns are thought to have various meanings, with the "eye" motifs being particularly popular and highly valued. In Tibet, they are cherished as amulets for wealth and prosperity, often passed down through generations and treasured as adornments. Recently, they have gained popularity in China, where they are called "Tianzhu" and many replicas are made using similar techniques. Nonetheless, ancient Dzi beads remain highly rare and valuable.
