Korngold left Vienna and became a successful composer of "film music" in Hollywood. But his heart was always in Vienna, and he dreamed of returning home to compose pure music. This Violin Concerto, whose melody is taken from the film music he had composed, is so beautiful and brilliant that it was called "anachronistic" at its premiere in 1945. It is now recognized as a representative work in the modern violin concerto repertoire, thanks to the efforts of Heifetz and other virtuoso composers.
