Description:

Following J.S. Bach's Unaccompanied and Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Christian Tetzlaff's latest disc of 2018 is a collection of Bartók's Violin Concertos, one of the most famous violin concertos of the 20th century. This time, Tetzlaff is accompanied by the popular conductor Lintu and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, a perfect arrangement that allows Tetzlaff to extend his performance. In the past, the only known Bartók violin concerto was "No. 2," composed between 1937 and 1938. The profound and tense musical ideas of the piece, with its use of folk-like material and even quartets, are characteristic of Bartók in his mature period, and many violinists have loved playing this piece. For a long time, this was thought to be the only Bartók violin concerto, but after his death, a concerto from his youth, composed between 1907 and 1908 and dedicated to Steffi Geier, was discovered and is now called the No. 1 concerto. Bartók had not yet awakened to folk music at this time, and the concerto has a late Romantic atmosphere similar to that of Wagner and Richard Strauss, who were influences at the time.Tetzlaff and Lintu express the transition of Bartók's style by precisely playing two different styles, and also clearly show the fusion of folk music and avant-garde music in the late Bartók's works.
