David Alan Miller, National Orchestra Institute Philharmonic
Description:
The National Orchestra Institute Philharmonic is an ensemble of musicians drawn from around the world through a rigorous audition process for a concert at the University of Maryland each June. NAXOS has previously released their 2015 performance (8.559782) and 2016 performance (8.559822), and this is their third album for 2017. The works chosen for this concert are by three leading modern and contemporary American composers. Of the three, Ruggles is the most taciturn, completing only 10 works in his lifetime, making this performance very valuable; the complex general score, with its huge number of notes written in a condensed 15-minute time span, is difficult to play, but the orchestra has created a perfect sound. Stucky's concerto is the result of a close relationship between the composer and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It features a variety of devices, including sound anagrams. Harbison's symphony was commissioned by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. It is a work with a jazz flavor. Naxos Japan
