Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" was very popular in Paris in the 18th century, long before its dramatic revival in the 20th century. Especially "Spring" was performed in public as early as 1764, when Mozart first visited Paris. Not to miss this popularity, Shedeville ......, a musician who was also active in the sheet music publishing industry, once published a collection of sonatas called "The Faithful Shepherd" (as Vivaldi's Op. 13) by cutting and pasting from a number of Vivaldi's existing works. He published a collection of six pieces, "The Four Delightful Seasons," based on "The Four Seasons," with two additional pieces arranged in a similar manner. This collection was a success as a score for playing famous pieces on the viol (hurdy-gurdy, a stringed instrument played by turning a wheel with a handle to rub the strings), which was popular among amateur musicians in Paris at the time, and was published in a collection of works by French Baroque composers ("Beautiful Vielles," RIC 382). Toby Miller, a new-generation violist who has demonstrated his remarkable virtuosity in a collection of French Baroque composers ("Beautiful Vielle Players," RIC 382), will perform this collection in a chamber orchestra, giving us the latest interpretation of every detail in fluent style. Although this is a collection of pieces well-known to classical music connoisseurs, there are few opportunities to learn the details, and we are grateful for the extensive commentary. Naxos Japan
