The 20-year-old Brahms made the acquaintance of Hungarian-born Jewish violinist Eduard (Ede) Remenyi, and went on a concert tour as Remenyi's accompanist. It is well known that he had the opportunity to experience Hungarian traditional music and Roma folk music, and that his meeting with Joseph Joachim had a great influence on his subsequent creative activities. This album features the four-hand piano version of "Hungarian Dances," one of Brahms's most famous works, as well as a vast collection of works by almost unknown composers and Hungarian melodies that Brahms heard. The album's collection of simple folk songs, heroic dances, and variations will give you a glimpse of how Brahms used these original compositions as material for his own works.
