The MDR Leipzig Symphony Orchestra and the brilliant conductor Dennis Russell Davies perform Rafe Vaughan Williams' masterpiece "Sea Symphony," which celebrates the 150th anniversary of his birth in 2022. The "Sea Symphony," which uses Walt Whitman's poem "Leaves of Grass" as its text, was originally conceived as a symphonic poem. It was later renamed "Symphony No. 1" with a large orchestra of soprano and baritone solo voices and mixed chorus. It is an oratorio-like work with a large choral emphasis, and here MDR Symphony principal conductor Dennis Russell Davies gives an excellent and well-balanced performance. Serenade to Music" was written for the Golden Jubilee Concert of Sir Henry Wood (1869-1944), a conductor who made great contributions to British music. The version here is for four solo singers, chorus, and orchestra. This is a recording in which one can fully enjoy the sound of Vaughan Williams, who was an expert in handling choral music.
