The latest recording by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ludovic Morlot, is a collection of French songs featuring the renowned tenor Ian Bostridge as solo singer. In 2004, Bostridge recorded French songs by Debussy, Fauré, and Poulenc, but this time he chooses more dramatic works such as Berlioz's "Summer Nights" and Ravel's "Scheherazade. Bostridge, who is known for his thorough study of the works and his unique interpretation of them, sang all the pieces with dramatic expression and skillful vocalization, pursuing the literalness of the works. The "Summer Nights" and Scheherazade, which are often sung by female voices, are very fresh to the ear. The piano part of Debussy's "Five Baudelaire" songs is arranged for orchestra by John Adams in a version that pursues an even more colorful sound than the original. Naxos Japan
