Carmina Burana, a four-volume set of medieval manuscripts brought back to life in the present "Carmina Burana" is a collection of medieval Latin, Middle High German, and other poetry, named for the Bavarian monastery that housed them. Today, it is best known for the secular cantata of the same name composed by Carl Orff, a collection of love poems, student songs, and religious verses in Latin and German. In the 1980s, a systematic approach was taken, and the New London Consort, one of England's most innovative old music ensembles, made a much-discussed recording on Decca's Oiseaux Reels under the direction of Philip Pickett. A year after the success of the first volume, recorded in 1986, three albums were released, followed by a set in 1996, which was unavailable for some time.
